Willingness to Pay

“I would pay $100 for this today for plugin creator”

Feature Ideas

  1. Generative Audio
  2. Generative MIDI

Philosophy: Complement the Human

  • Makes a lot of 4 bar loops — the question is: how do you go from a loop to a track?
  • AI should generate arrangement around it

Suno Workflow

  • The killer feature was the stem splitter
  • Upload a loop → generate 10s of ideas for tracks → favorite the best ones → split into stems
  • Makes a giant Ableton session with groups for each song, layered on top of each other — almost like comping

Variation Exploration

  • Exploring lots of variations and exploring in melodic space
  • Explore variations across different tracks — “more like this”
  • What was a cool drum line? What was a cool fill?

Other Observations

  • Studio engineer stuff is downstream from the creative work — less of a hook
  • Apple has a feature with 2 buttons: “Proofread” and “Rewrite” — suggests a new rewrite

Starting Skepticism → Demo Won Him Over

Came in skeptical of the idea of building a DAW — a month ago told me not to do it.
  • “Do we really need another DAW”
  • “Is there room in the market”
The demo helped him visualize what it could be and made him want to play with it — despite being janky.

What Resonated

  • Rust vs web — too many web DAWs
  • Microtonal as a first-class citizen
  • AI native, and understanding that Ableton et al. have a lot of tech debt
  • Collaboration — he liked Splice back in the day for async collab, and mentioned the Chuck language for realtime collab
  • AI operator / interface creation — usually he wants a simple way to record one thing through simple effects; he “knows what he wants” but it’s clunky to get there
  • AI generated MIDI + Bird — he feels pure audio is not enough, since sheet music / music notation is still very important
  • Future Magenta models could do audio→audio generation based on your master output as a first-class citizen
  • Drop in video felt important — he works across gen media, not just music
  • Claude Code moment is really good timing for this, and the TAM is a lot bigger than we thought given Suno’s success
